Description

Peripheral Control Program, or just PCP for short is a reasonable program, Watching her go by, she could be considered happy-go-lucky. Very few programs within the system know who she really is, The Master Control Program's daughter. Any program who watches her would just consider her one of the free programs that have no real purpose. This isn't true, for most of her life she was privately tutored by Commander Sark under the MCP's permission for when she would be ready to take the MCP's place as the ENCOM-511's Authorial Super-Program.

If you meet her for the first time, she seems quite curious and seems to be harmless. She has an intense curiosity for anything and everything she hasn't seen before. She's also quite intelligent for a program of her age, that would be where her father's well known data-acquisition subroutines kick in. She is quite fast at picking up new skills and techniques that would add to her benefit. Of course, she often does pick up data that doesn't benefit her in any way. She keeps it for future reference or for a form of entertainment.

But under her cheerful and blissful mind-set is her greatest weakness. She's naive and can sometimes forget that programs do have a problem with her father and WILL harm her if it means getting at the MCP's deep-rooted paternal sub-routines. So if anything was to happen to her, the MCP would worry immensely. He never seems to care but knows his limitations when it comes to looking after PCP. And on occasions, she does get moody. Now when that happens it's often because the Commander has told her off for something.

She can be quick to help, she loves trying to help out most programs. She often does get in trouble for this though. More often than not by her 'Uncle' Sark. She doesn't know what relation Sark really is to her father. So that's her name for him, she uses it regardless of what mood she's in.

She knows how to use most interfaces in the system, most notably the carriers controls. Accidentally making the carrier go into a nose-dive at one point. Which really annoyed Commander Sark and is the reason why she's not allowed near the controls of the carrier if she's on the command-deck.

She does like to rile up the Commander for laughs, often following behind him and pulling his helmet before running away. Often returning again for another go. Sark has told the MCP time and time again, but now even the MCP laughs when it happens. Making the Commander not only embarrassed, but in the mood to give PCP a death-wish.

Hobbies

PCP loves having stuff to do, even if it's only a small errand. She'll read a book and stay reading it until she finishes it or something bigger gets her attention, She often watches Light-Cycle matches on the Game-Grid when she can. She loves to use her voice emulation sub-routine to sing. She also loves music, she'll listen to most music but she does have her likes and dislikes. For example she loves synthesized music, she dislikes Rap. Complaining that it makes no sense to her, she has a particular love for music by David Bowie which she doesn't understand. She's probably listened to every single track he's made, to be honest she wouldn't be surprised.

She also loves to dance, especially when choreography is involved. She can often be found doing the Choreography for 'Rhythm Nation' when she's bored. She takes learning the choreography seriously, if she likes it. She'll spend micro cycles trying to learn it.

She loves to use her imagination, due to her ability to be a fast learner. She has a fairly large imagination because she's taking in new information all the time, which can be seen as a hindrance to when she's thinking. As so many things demand her attention when she's trying to focus on a single thought.

Background

Peripheral Control Program was originally intended to be a simple tutorial program made by Dillinger's niece in the real world, Dillinger invited his niece to ENCOM as part of Work Experience. Dillinger granted his niece a temporary account on the ENCOM-511 system under free development with little restrictions.

The MCP at the time was annoyed with Dillinger granting his niece that space, he wanted to move all the data and programs he had appropriated there. Ruefully he watched the niece work on her program. She was quite talented, much like the programmer Flynn. So he started giving the niece more data to work with, feeling like it was a good thing to do. She didn't know where the data was coming from. but thankfully added what she could.

Before she could get close to completing the Alpha version, she had to go back to England to continue her education. The MCP deleted the account and took the uncompleted program, he could use it to his advantage as he looked at where the gaps where in the programming, it looked like a giant jigsaw puzzle of code. Filling the the gaps in with data from appropriated sources and removed the source-code that the niece had programmed and placed a copy of his own, giving the program many of his own sub-routines. One of them is the data-acquisition. And more importantly, made the program self-aware.

He completely changed the program's personality, pausing his progress, before deciding the designation. Peripheral Control Program. His child, heir and prodigy. The first program to be completed with no need for a user. Bringing her into resolution for the first time.

More things to know about Peripheral Control Program:

Belief in users

Peripheral doesn't believe in users personally, but she respects the programs who do. She is often curious about why she has never had a user. She refuses to ask her father, knowing he didn't think kindly of them. The question of either or not she has a user still burns in her head.

Vocal Emulation

Peripheral is quite talented when it comes to voices, She can speak in certain voices if she can emulate the vocal chords needed to pull off the voice. sometimes she doesn't have much control over her voice emulation ability, if she does something stupid like trip over her own feet she takes on the voice of her father. She sometimes enjoys insulting her uncle's voice. She has tried it against her uncle once, Sark walked away in annoyance.

Future Updates?

Over PCP's life time, she will experience different changes to her being. Most noticeable at the moment is how her voice is actually synthesizing into a tone much like her father's. Her voice however will not be as baritone as her father's. She will also be able to use her Voice Emulation to use her old voice if she desires to as it will remove any unessesary attention attracted to herself.

Two Cycles (Aproximate years) after Post-MCP-Deresolution, PCP will experience a growth spurt, at her current age she is just under 5'1''... She will grow at an aproximate 14 Inches. Making her 6'3''. Primarily because the MCP's past form (Before he took over the system.) Was 6'5'' Secondly because dormant subroutines embedded by the MCP will require more space to function, so PCP's growth spurt will comfortably accomodate the subroutines. What those subroutines are, is unknown as of yet.

Random Facts

*The design on her head loosely resembles the shape you see on a USB plug.
*If she was ever given a voice actor, she would need several to accommodate her 'Vocal Emulation' subroutine.
*She was originally designed to be a modern program that controlled data that entered the system from 'peripheral' devices.
*Her name was originated from the above fact.
*She and the MCP had nothing to do with each other originally.
*Her personality was originally planned short tempered and rude towards nearly every program that got in her way.

Here's PCP's profile, at long last. -_o

I have no idea why I added the DOS like beginning and end of it. It sounded right when I wrote it. Kinda gives you a feeling you're reading a private document or something. ^_^;

(P.S. Keep checking this deviation in case something changes, I keep note of every edit I make underneath this note. So you always know what's new! ;D)

Edit: 20/02/08 - Added Vocal Emulation to both Strengths and Weaknesses. + Added More to "More Things to Know about Peripheral:"
Edit: 26/02/08 - Added "Random Facts".
Edit: 02/03/08 - Added "Hobbies".

Looks like Periph finally got her long awaited profile. :)

I was suddenly reminded of Tron I started and stopped because of the Tron: Ghost in the Machine comic.
Anyway I brought this up because I wondered if Periph'd work/go well with a program I'd invented, called Inmes. He/it is an instant messenger program. Looks like a large blue bit/byte/not sure which, with glowing yellow eyes and a mouth. He was created as a way for ENCOM users to contact each other from their computers. In the Electronic World, he can send messages to and from programs and communicates by . . . how do I describe this, spitting out a screen/IM box with text on it.

The catch, I guess, is that he was/going to be invented by Dillinger's son, Arthur.

You have the TRON:Ghost in the Machine Comic?! O_o Lucky. T_T I've seen the covers and that's about it. I want to know what happens! :/
That's a bizarre program. :D I think Peripheral would get along well with Inmes.
I don't imagine Dillinger ever having kids, but hey. It's fiction, it don't have to make sense. ;D

Yeah, it looks cool, but they butchered the MCP beyond belief. I can only hope it's because the MCP Jet meets was actually a fake/decoy. . .

Good to hear. :)
I saw the RPG you're doing. I like to attempt to shove Inmes in (and to a certain extent Arthur), but I'm not sure how. :(

O_O They butchered the almighty Master Control Program?! -Loud gasp.- How?!

You might want to read up to where the RPG's gotten to so far before starting. So you know where we are. :D I believe you can just join in but it'll be a good idea to ask 1010100100101 first. Don't want to get you in trouble :D

Ah well, you'd have to read it to believe it. I'd give you a few quotes, but I'd have to literally dig up my copies.

Yeah, I've been reading it, so worries there. Right, I'll just let 101etc know I'm interested. :)

No problem, and that's alright. I do get those moments where I can't log on as well.
I recommend reading to where we are first, you can bring in Electra easily, just say that she was exploring around that area as an act of rebellion and she happened to turn around the corner and notice PCP, then Electra could call out to PCP and surprise her, not noticing the two other programs. ^_^' That's how I would bring Electra in, of course. You don't have to take my idea seriously
